Today the Promised One is addressed as the Radiant Dawn (O Oriens). This is to indicate that he will come like the sunrise to bring the light of understanding to the people who live in the darkness of ignorance. More than that, he will bring healing to the poor and the weak by allowing the power of God’s justice to bear on those who are oppressing them.
“The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: to them that dwelt in the land of darkness, a light is risen” (Isaiah 9,2)
“For you who fear my name there will arise the Sun of Justice with its healing rays, and you shall tread down the wicked like ashes under your feet”. (Malachi 3,20-21)
O Radiant Dawn, splendor of eternal light and sun of justice; come and enlighten those sitting in darkness and in the shadow death. (Evening Prayer antiphon of December 21st)
